Safety Tips for Working With Electrical Wiring
Any type of home electrical project should not be taken lightly. Electrical systems produce high voltages that can cause serious injury. We always recommend hiring your local electrician for all electrical work. However, we also want to offer some safety tips to those who want to try to do some minor electrical upgrades. Our safety tips include the following:
- Make Sure the Power is OFF: Turn off the power using your breaker box prior to starting any electrical work. Use a voltage tester to ensure that the power is off. We recommend taping the breaker to be sure it does not turn back on.
- Do Not Work in Wet Areas: Water and electrical systems do not mix ever. If your work area is wet, do not perform any electrical work. Stay away from all electrical systems because you are at high risk of electrocution if you do.
- Be Careful of What You Touch: Never touch any gas or plumbing pipes while working on wiring. This can cause serious damage to your home and injuries to yourself or others.
- Use A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter: These are portable devices that you can plug into an outlet or circuit. If there is a power surge because someone is being electrocuted, the GFCI will detect it and turn off the power. It can be used as a failsafe in case something goes wrong.
- Use Junction Boxes: Do not splice wires together and hide them in a wall without a junction box. An easily accessible junction box should always be used to join wires together.
